According to Thomas C. Foster's book, How to Read Literature Like a Professor, there are five key elements to a quest:
1. A Quester
2. A Place to Go
3. A Stated Reason to Go
4. Challenges and Trials
5. The Real Reason to Go
Colin is our quester in the book An Abundance of Katherines. This is very obvious because Colin fulfills every aspect of a quester.

A Questor: Our questor is Colin, which is very clear because he is the main character in this book.
A Place to Go: Our Questor begins his quest when he and his friend Hassan take a road trip from Chicago to Gunshot, Tennessee.
A Stated Reason to Go: After Colin's breakup with his nineteenth Katherine, his friend Hassan hopes that taking a road trip will get his mind off of a devastating breakup.
Challenges and Trials: Colin is always getting a broken heart from a girl named Katherine. All different girls, but the same emotions attached. His odd obsession with the name Katherine keeps him from exploring other relationships with girls of different names. Once Colin decides to let his obsession go, he develops feelings for a girl named Lindsay. He is not really allowed to develop a relationship with her because her boyfriend TOC, whose name is also Colin, will not allow it.
The Real Reason to Go: The real reason for a quest, according to Thomas C. Foster, is self-knowlage. Colin figures out that in order for him to be happy he doesn't have to date a girl named Katherine nor does he need to be remembered as a genius. All he needs to be happy is that he needs to have relationships and friendships with those who love and truly care about him.
