When an author puts two characters in a book that have the same name there is some pretty big significance between those characters. Colin our main character is a very shy, lonely, socially awkward kid who doesn't really fit in with the crowd. The other Colin, also known as TOC, is a popular, handsome, sporty kid who has many friends and has a girlfriend. Except her name isn't Katherine. TOC is someone who Colin has always wanted to be. When Lindsay meets Colin and talks about TOC to him she says, "he's the cutest boy in school and the only one from Gutshot who's popular" (148). After Colin stays in Gutshot for a while, he sees that TOC isn't really who he wants to be like. He realizes that he wants change and TOC is a kid that is "going to work in that factory his whole life, and he's going to have the same friends, and he's really happy with that, and he thinks it matters" (150). Colin understands that he wants change in his life and that he doesn't want to be simple. Colin figures out that all he needs is happiness in his life and that his future is "infinite and unknowable and beautiful. 'Eureka'" (212). He no longer needs to strive towards being remembered.
