It all started with a toilet!
Hilly says that she wants, "A bill that requires every white home to have a separate bathroom for the colored help. I've even notified the surgeon general of Mississippi to see if he'll endorse the idea." (Stocket 10). She believes that it is not right for them to use the same bathrooms because they might carry diseases and other insignificant things. When Skeeter hears this, she wants no part in it. Hilly asks her for her support by writing a post in her newsletter about Hilly's campaign and wants people to drop off old coats at her house, but instead of putting coats in the newsletter, Skeeter writes commodes. This outrages Hilly and begins her conflict with Skeeter.
Skeeter believes in equality among blacks and whites. This value was instilled in her as a child by her maid Constantine who raised her. Aibileen is similar to Constantine because she is raising a white child and instilling good morals in her that all people are created equal. Skeeter wants to see a change and asks Aibileen the same thing, "Do you ever wish you could...change things?" (Stocket 12). This is the start of Skeeter and Aibileens new friendship and the start of an even bigger conflict between Skeeter and Hilly.
